Buttonbush Woods
at Origin Park
Nestled within the direct floodplain of the Ohio River in Clarksville, Indiana, Buttonbush Woods is a vibrant, 103-acre urban forest that serves as a cornerstone of Origin Park’s ecological revival. Named after the resilient native wetland shrub known for its distinct globe-like white flowers, this area is a powerful testament to environmental restoration—transforming land once compromised by industrial-era neglect into a thriving, climate-resilient biodiversity hotspot.
Buttonbush Woods is a sanctuary for both local fauna and weary urbanites. Towering, 100-foot-tall Eastern Cottonwoods shade a rich understory alive with the scent of sweet black locust flowers. The woods protect a rare mosaic of habitats—including sedge meadows, savannas, and riparian zones—that support deer, wild turkey, and over 180 species of birds, including the striking prothonotary warbler and the distinct call of the pileated woodpecker.
While the grand vision of Origin Park continues to unfold, the Buttonbush Woods Trailhead serves as an active, welcoming gateway for everyday visitors, featuring:
- Mill Creek Trail: An easily accessible path perfect for hiking, nature walks, and biking.
- Vibrant Gathering Spaces: Artistic concrete pads painted by local muralists feature game graphics for child's play alongside accessible picnic tables and bike racks.
- The Friendship Circle: A welcoming ring of log seating designed for small-group conversations, educational programs, and community workshops.
- An Outdoor Classroom: A dedicated space hosting hands-on community programming, from youth photography and nature writing workshops to guided fungi foraging walks.
As a climate-adaptive park, Buttonbush Woods embraces the natural rhythm of the Ohio River. While the current trail system cleverly utilizes historic flood levees to stay dry, future phases will introduce The Upper Way—an elevated, fully accessible boardwalk system. This innovative infrastructure will allow visitors to safely experience the raw majesty of the flooded forest canopy and sweeping river views year-round, even when the river waters rise.
Visiting Info: The Buttonbush Woods Trailhead is located at 398 Emery Crossing, Clarksville, IN, just minutes across the river from downtown Louisville.
